AVENIDA DE PAPEL

The official map of Lisbon shows an avenue that does not exist. Where it should be, there is a large, hilly wasteland, separating the tourist and working-class neighbourhoods. Mariana tries to find her way around, trying to unravel the mystery by asking passers-by where the avenue is. The search for landmarks becomes an investigation into this imaginary avenue, into the past and present of the neighbourhood, and into its future. Against the lies and silence of the map, the inhabitants are invited to tell their stories, their fears and their wishes, by drawing and commenting on their own maps of the neighbourhood, which is increasingly threatened by real estate speculation.

Sur le plan officiel de Lisbonne figure une avenue qui n’existe pas. Là où elle devrait passer, s’étend une grande friche vallonnée, séparant quartiers touristiques et quartiers populaires. Mariana cherche son chemin, tente de percer le mystère en demandant aux passants où se trouverait l’avenue. La quête de repères devient une enquête sur cette avenue imaginaire, sur le passé et le présent du quartier, et sans doute son futur. Contre le mensonge et le silence de la carte, les habitants sont invités à raconter leurs histoires, leurs craintes et leurs souhaits, en dessinant et commentant leurs propres cartes du quartier, chaque jour plus menacé par la spéculation immobilière.
